Canary Privacy Policy
Last updated: April 4, 2026
The Short Version
Canary does not track you. It collects no analytics, contains no third-party SDKs, and sends nothing to us. There is no Aviary server for your data to travel to. Everything Canary knows about you lives on your device and, if you enable it, in your own iCloud account.
Data We Collect
None. Canary does not collect, store, or transmit personal data to Aviary or to any third party. We operate no servers and no databases, and we have no mechanism by which we could see which services you monitor or how you use the app.
Data Stored on Your Device
Canary stores the following locally so the app can do its job:
- The list of services you have added to your dashboard, and how you have arranged them.
- Any custom HTTP monitors you create, including the URL, expected status code, timeout, and polling interval.
- Recent status history and incident details fetched from the status pages you monitor.
- Your notification preferences and app settings.
- Cached favicons for the services on your dashboard.
Deleting Canary removes all of this from your device.
Network Requests
Every network request Canary makes goes directly from your device to its destination. Nothing is proxied through, logged by, or routed via any server operated by Aviary. Canary makes exactly three kinds of request:
- Status page APIs — Canary fetches public status data from the providers behind the services on your dashboard, including Statuspage, Apple, AWS, Google Cloud, Stripe, and Status.io. These are the same public endpoints that back the status pages you could visit in a browser.
- Custom monitors — For any URL you add yourself, Canary makes an HTTP HEAD request on the schedule you choose. It sends no credentials, cookies, or body content, and it records only the response status code and timing.
- Favicons — Canary fetches the icon for a service from that service's own domain so your dashboard has something to show.
Operators of the status pages and custom URLs you monitor will see these requests in their own logs, as they would for any HTTP client. Their handling of that information is governed by their privacy policies, not ours.
iCloud Sync
If you have iCloud enabled, Canary uses Apple's CloudKit to sync your dashboard, custom monitors, and settings across your devices. That data is written to your personal iCloud account and is governed by Apple's privacy policy. We cannot access it. Turning off iCloud for Canary keeps everything local to each device.
Notifications
Canary can alert you when a service goes down or recovers. These are local notifications, scheduled on your device by the app itself. No push notification service is used, no device token is registered with us, and no external server is involved in deciding what you are notified about.
Third-Party SDKs
None. Canary contains zero third-party libraries, frameworks, analytics packages, advertising identifiers, or crash reporters. It is built entirely with Apple's native frameworks.
Tip Jar and Purchases
Canary is free with no feature gates. It includes an optional tip jar powered by Apple's StoreKit 2. Apple handles every transaction end to end; we never receive or store your payment information, and we cannot tell who has tipped.
Children's Privacy
Canary collects no data from anyone, including children under 13. It contains no age-gated content, no user-generated content, and no way to communicate with other users.
Changes to This Policy
If this policy changes, the updated version will be posted on this page with a new date. Because Canary collects no data, meaningful changes are unlikely.
